Do You Have Too Much Muscle?

There is a point of diminishing return when it comes to muscle mass – where the extra muscle impedes performance and literally becomes dead weight.  When I was in college, I wanted to be huge.  But the bigger I got, the slower I got, and my athleticism was seriously compromised.  Muscle mass is great – if it’s functional.  For me, the tipping point is 195 pounds.  Anymore, and the extra muscle starts to work against me.  If you’re an athlete seeking to add muscle, be mindful of your tipping point.  Is your speed compromised?  Is your functional strength compromised – can you still pop off the same number of pull-ups and pushups – because in theory you should be doing more?  Has your endurance been compromised?  Do you feel heavy on your feet?  If you answered yes to any one of these, you’re probably too heavy.
