Functional strength means being strong in the real world, lifting heavy, lopsided objects at bazaar angles to difficult heights. To best develop this strength, one must work the entire body spectrum – lifting something from the floor to over the head. This may consist of flipping heavy tractor tires, performing kettlebell snatches or just old fashion clean and presses. Unlike most weight training, we’re not attempting to isolate a muscle, tear it down and make it grow bigger. We’re moving a weight from the floor to the ceiling using every muscle in the body. And these movements require MOMENTUM. That means they require “quasi” explosive force. We’ve got to get that weight moving or it’s not going to reach its destination. There’s no way to cheat on these exercises. You either make it happen or it doesn’t. Athletes who integrate this form of training into their routines are – explosive – well conditioned – and always the strongest. They also have the greatest muscle density.

Testosterone therapy is big business these days but levels over 700 can cause serious side effects. First off, most doctors are over-dosing their patients and failing to prescribe estrogen blockers. When testosterone levels shoot over 700 the excess converts to estrogen which is called aromizing. High estrogen levels lead to symptoms such as night sweats, the red look, water retention (the puffy look), limp erections, irritability, and muscle loss and weakness. Estrogen blockers such as Arimidex, Clomid and Tamoxafin will alleviate these symptoms – if your doctor will prescribe them. But regardless of high estrogen, high testosterone can cause other more serious side effects – like thickening of the blood. And this could lead to a stroke or heart attack. When your blood is too thick it gets sticky which causes high glucose levels (blood sugar) and high cholesterol – even if you’re eating a perfect diet! This is because your blood is too sticky to get rid of them – and sticky blood means less oxygen transfer and more retained toxins. If you’re on testosterone therapy and your hematocrit (red blood count/iron levels) is high, immediately cut back on your dosage and donate blood. High test is not a good thing!

Note: It’s good to donate blood every few months. It’s not only life giving, your body will replenish itself with fresh clean blood. There are Carter Blood Care centers everywhere.

To achieve and maintain your fitness goals, you must stick with your program forever, so its not surprising that many highly motivated individuals eventually fall off the wagon. The other day a good friend asked me what’s the best way to stay motivated. I believe the answer lies in COMPETITION – however that may manifest itself – whether in sports, against illness or oneself. Training for a sport provides an athletic identity and purpose which will ground you to the fitness lifestyle. And there are many sports to choose from, even at my age. For example – rock climbing, boxing, tennis, cycling, kettlebell Sport and CrossFit. Also, making friends in your sport will further cement you to the fitness lifestyle. If your buddies are going to the rock climbing wall – then you’ll be going to the rock climbing wall. Conversely, if your friends are going to the local bar – you know the rest of that story. But competition doesn’t have to be confined to sports. If you have a health issue – get mad – get resolute – and get competitive with that health issue. If you’ve got type II diabetes, make it a fight – beat it! And don’t forget those silent competitions against other people which harken to the adage – Living Well is the Best Revenge. We all know people against whom we silently compete. Well beat those people! Look better. Be better. Outlive them. Make them swallow your passive aggressive pill of victory. (Women – you totally know what I’m talking about:) Yea, I know that sounds twisted – but it’s reality. Ultimately, if you wanna stay the course, you have to stay competitive – even if it’s with yourself.

Get Competitive!!

I’ve been taking pre-workout powders and energy shots for over 10 years – that is until two months ago when my doctor said I needed to see a liver specialist – so I stopped taking all energy products, which included those with Creatine and L-Arginine. This week my liver function tested perfectly normal for the first time in forever. Energy products have excessive amounts of Niacin, B-12 and Taurine – all of which are toxic to the liver in high doses. Creatine in high doses is also toxic to the liver. I thought my liver function was elevated all of these years because of hard living in my 20′s and 30′s. Turns out it was energy products – all purchased at the local health food store. Thank God I addressed the correct variable. If your liver function is high and you don’t drink or drug – think about eliminating the energy products. Not only has my liver function returned to normal, I feel much more relaxed and my cardio has improved. Surprisingly, without the Creatine and L-Arginine my muscles did not shrink! They actually seem harder and more vascular now, and I weigh exactly the same. Go figure.
